Hopefully, you realize that the quote and book title that appear at the beginning of every chapter are , in fact, almost a foreshadowing of the events to occur in the chapter. Your job is to explain how that quote connects to the action of the plot in that particular chapter you have been assigned.
11/4/08 Chapter One Quote Connection:
1. "The queen for her part, is the unifying force of the community; if she is removed from her hive, the workers very quickly sense her absence. After a few hours, or even less, they show unmistakable signs of queenlessness." -Man and Insects
This very quote starts the beginning of chapter one and leaves you thinkng about what the quote means while you read the chapter. I think that this quote refers to the absence of Lily's mother and how Lily feels about the loss of her mother. Lily feels that if her mother was still alive she would have a much better life. Her mother would control T. Ray's amount of abbusiveness towards Lily and would help Lily with growing up. Ever since her mom died, Lily constantly thinks about her mother and wishes to join her in paradise one day. Lily's father, T. Ray, has become very abusive since the death of his wife. He doesn'y allow Lily to do buy new clothes, hang out with friends, or go to any parties. Yet, if Lily's mother was still alive she would probably allow her to do all of these things. This quote compares to the chapter because it shows that ever since Lily's mother has died everything in the Owens household has headed downhill, just like the queenbee and her workers.

This quote starts at the beginning of chapter three. I think it foreshadows that Lily and Rosaleen are going to find the people her mother knew before she can find out about her mother. It also leaves you thinking about how some of the time you have to look for the clues before you can get the answer, and how even those who may seem unimportant could help you find what you are looking for.

This quote discusses the family structure of a colony. It suggests that Lily will find another family, even if the people she meets may not be related to her. Each of the people in this family will be very different, and the family will not be complete without all of them. The quote also talks about how important women will be in this novel. I think that they will help Lily grow as a character, and mature as a person.

This quote refers to to August Boatwright. When August Boatwright told the story about the "Lady of Chains" in the Meeting. It got all the people in the meeting to become engaged in the story. Which is alot like queen bee, the worker bees, and the substance. The story would be the substance, the queen bee would be August, and the worker bees would be Lily and everyone in the meeting.

This quote refers to the relationship problems in this chapter. Lily is beginning to like Zach, but she knows that they could never be together because she is white and he is African American. It also refers to June and Neil. June and Neil are in love, but June was left at the altar once, and she is afraid of remarrying. Neil really wants to be married and is angry when June refuses his offer again.

This quote says that to stay alive, everyone must have a friend to lean on and to care about them. At the beginning of the chapter, Lily finds that she and August have two things in common with each other, peanuts in their coke and blue is their favorite color. Lily says that she feels like the quote, "Birds of a feather flock together." This shows that she feels that she has someone similar to her. Also, August talks a lot about the generations before her. Without the people before us, we wouldn't be here. Our Lady of Chains also is a friend to lean on for help. At the end of the chapter, Lily asks for help and love. She touches the lady's heart and feels stronger with her help.

This quote says that communication is very important. In chapter 9, Lily receives the courage to tell August about all of the lies that she has told and about her mother. However, after Zach is put in jail, Lily decides not to bring it up to bring more sorrow for August. Lily knows that when the time is right, she will tell her.

This quote begins at chapter eleven. After reading the chapter, I was able to depict the reason the author chose such a quote. I believe the quote is referring to how hard it is to get over something but in the end it is all worth it, and you have to pull through even through the toughest of times. I think that the quote is related to the chapter by how Lily has such a hard time telling August the truth and how after trying so hard it was worth it. After telling August the truth and why she had come to their house, she gained so much more of a bond between her and August, and learned the truth about her mother, just as the bees would gain a pound of honey from pulling through and making the ten million foraging trips to gather the nectar.

This quote connects with Lily's mother. When August tells Lily about her mother she mentions August working for Lily's family, how she married T. Ray because she was pregnant with Lily, how she became depressed and came to August's house, and how she didn't bring Lily with her. The part of the quote that says "spends her days confined in darkness" refers to Lily's mother growing depressed at T. Ray's farm because she hated being stuck there. The part of the quote that says "this is something of a mockery because of her lack of maternal instincts or the ability to care for her young" was what Lily was feeling toward her mother when she found out about how she left her and how she only married T. Ray because she was pregnant with Lily.

Since they were helping each other and working together they rewarded for their work. This quote means that if you work hard for something, you will always be rewarded for your work, even if it's just a small reward.

I think this quote is really relating to Lily and her mother. In this chapter she is going through some problems and she got really sad and wouldn't even eat. It is basically saying that Deborah is the queen and without her Lily's life will be sad. It is also saying that without the help from August, June and Rosaleen she would stay like this. But they are also saying if the push to much then Lily will also stay like this. And finally they are saying that if a new queen is introduced then the bees will be better. August, June and Rosaleen will be Lily's new queens and they will take care of her. Also in this chapter one of the hives lost a queen and August showed Lily that even the bees get sad when they lose a queen, but also said that a new one will be coming soon. She told Lily that the bees will never be without a queen, and she was basically saying Lily will always have a mother to.
